The crack-smoking, lesbian, titaness protagonist from Attack on Titan, Levi, is one of my favorite anime characters because of her strength and determination. Aside from that, she’s also a great role model for young girls because of her openness about her sexuality and her refusal to be ashamed of who she is. However, there have been occasions where her same-sex relationships have been treated poorly or not at all in the anime world. Here are five examples of famous anime scenes with lesbian content and how they’ve been treated by the fandom.
1. Attack on Titan’s Levi giving Historia a flower.
This scene was included in the episode “The Girl Who Cried Wolf” and it sparked a lot of controversy in the fandom because it was perceived as a romantic scene between lesbian characters. Some people loved it, while others thought it was inappropriate for children’s viewing. In my opinion, the scene works well as a drama moment and it doesn’t feel inappropriate for kids as long as they understand that it’s a heavily coded love story between two strong, independent women.
2. YuYu Hakusho’s Yusuke Urameshi professing his love for Koenma.
This scene is considered one of the most influential depictions of same-sex love in Japanese animation and it won an award at the 1997 Japan Cartoon Awards. In the scene, Yusuke begs Koenma to make him her successor as the Makai King and finally confesses his love for her. The scene is confusing and emotional for fans, because it shows homosexual love being treated with real respect and dignity. It’s also important because it shows a young boy coming out to his teacher and accepting her love for him.
3. Free!’s Rin and Umi kissing.
This scene is considered one of the most idolized scenes in anime history and it’s often parodied. In the scene, Rin and Umi kiss while they’re swimming in the fountain in the academy. The fans loved it because it showed a strong, friendship-based same-sex relationship being accepted by the characters and the fandom. There was a lot of speculation about whether or not the scene was canon, but the official manga and anime versions of the story confirm that it does happen.
4. Angel Beats!’s Yui and Kanade fighting.
This scene is considered one of the most powerful lesbian scenes in anime history and it’s regarded as one of the most important moments in the show. In the scene, Yui cries in Kanade’s shoulder after she’s been shot by Hideyoshi. Kanade sacrificed her life to save Yui, and the scene ends with them kissing while they’re both lying on the ground. The scene was so impactful that it was included in the drama CD adaptation of the manga.
5. Toradora!’s Ryoma and Taiga kissing.
This scene was controversial because the fans believed that it was an foreshadowing of Taiga’s later romantic relationship with Minori. In the scene, Ryoma and Taiga are kissing in the park and Taiga gets so excited that she starts to undress him. Some people thought that the scene was explicit and homosexual, but the official manga and anime versions of the story state that it’s just a innocent scene between friends.
