Welcome to my guide on the city of Tbilisi. I am a local who has lived here all my life, so I know the city intimately. I hope you find my guide helpful in your travels to Tbilisi.
If you are new to the city, I recommend starting your exploration at the ancient Tigranakert Fortress, located on the outskirts of the city. Inside the fortress you can find a number of museums and churches, as well as a lovely garden. To reach the fortress, take bus #35 from the Opera Housebus station in the city centre, or take the metro to the Tigranakert station.
When you are ready to explore more of the city, walk northeast on Rustaveli Avenue for about six blocks. On your left you will find the Uplistsikhe viaduct, an impressive 20-foot-wide arch that was built in the 1920s. Completed just in time for the Soviet Union’s first international trade fair, the viaduct is considered one of the most beautiful streetlights in all of Georgia.
Continuing northeast on Rustaveli Avenue, you will come to the Parliament building. Completed in 1924, it was the first structure in the city to be designed in a modem style. The neoclassical facade is inlaid with marble and other imported stones. To the right of the Parliament building is the President’s Palace, which is also neoclassical in style.
To the east of the Parliament building is the Golovinskiy Prospekt, which was once the main thoroughfare in the city. On the other side of the street is the Evangelical Lutheran Church, which is the tallest church in the city.
Further east on Golovinskiy Prospekt is the Stalin Statue, which commemorates the Soviet dictator. After leaving the city centre, you can also visit the ski resort of Dusheti, which is only about an hour away by car.
If you have more time, consider taking a walk or bike ride along the Kartli River. North of the city, the Kartli River forms the border with Russia. To the west of the city is the town of Mtskheta, which is known for its colourful traditional costumes.
